ISDN is 30-year old telecommunications transmission technology that carries voice and data services over the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

When it was introduced, ISDN was one of the best ways for a business to network their phone service, allowing multiple phone lines on a single connection. It was also great for connecting phone systems across many sites, due to its data capability.

With the advent of the internet and newer transmission services like MPLS and SIP, ISDN is now out-of-date technology.

How does this affect your business?

The NBN network is driving a switch from copper-based voice services to services that run over broadband & data services. Telstra has confirmed ISDN lines are going soon. If you want to keep your PSTN Phone numbers, you will have no choice but to move to VoIP based services to replace your old voice lines. Legacy PBX Hardware will require replacement with compatible IP based voices services, or a cloud-based solution.

What can you do?

If you have a large number of phones (e.g. 10+) we recommend replacing ISDN with SIP trunks, because these are more suited to phone systems compared to the NBN, which is mainly for data.

If you have under 10 phones, NBN should be adequate to meet your phone service needs, with the addition of a small VoIP (voice over internet protocol) set-up. In this situation, it therefore makes sense to switch from ISDN to NBN, when your business premises is made NBN-ready.
